II. Identifying Author's Purpose (Week 5) Read carefully the paragraph then determine the author's purpose in writing. Write P-if it is to Persuade; I- if it is to Inform and E- if it is to Entertain and or M-if it is a mixture of the three purposes.

1. “Just imagine a world without music. What would you whistle when you walked down the street? How could you make out or understand a movie? How could you have a basketball game without a band leading the crowd in a cheer when the home team sank a basket in the last two seconds of a tied game? "You could be the most successful doctor in the world. But ifyou never tum on the radio, never go to concert, never sing in the shower, and never see The King and I then you can't be a total, fulfilled human being. It's utterly impossible.”

2. "A person's character is like the seed of a plant. No matter what quality a seed possesses or what kind of structure it displays, it will not survive unless the ground in which it is planted is fertile. It must have the warmth of sunshine and freshness and moisture of falling rain. The surrounding in which we live, like the soil and rain for a seed, help determine how character will develop. 3. "What, then do I do in my solitary moments? I take to daydreaming, a sort of haven for lonely souls. But daydreaming does not occupy all my time. When nobody is around, I open my treasure box of odds and ends collected from my childhood. I live the past over again and wonder about my future."

4. "We should not measure a man's greatness by his ability to attain success. Rather, we should measure his greatness by the way he faces defeat and accepts it with courage. He is considered great because he possess a virtue which even men lack. He is the kind of man who deserves our admiration. A severe blow to his pride does not embitter him; he falls only to rise again. He may be ridiculed, but he is not disheartened because he knows that he has succeeded not trying to achieve something but in his relentless struggle with himself, to overcome the blight on his soul-his pride."

5. A travelogue is a write-up of a travel. It describes scenic places that a traveller would likely to see on a particular route. The travelogue includes information on available transportation and accommodations. It also lists leisure sites such as shopping centers and gives information on specialties in food, handicraft, or other goods particular to the place being written about.
