Previous knowledge helps you understand and recall previous lessons or things that you learned. It helps a learner refer what he/she learned before learning or starting a brand new topic. It measures their knowledge before actually learning another information. It does not mean that we actually need to have a knowledge about a certain topic before actually learning it, instead, we recall what we already learned about it before we learn more about it.
