Oviparity is the a mode of reproduction that deals with the process of laying eggs and is considered to be the ancestral mode of reproduction for vertebrates. Oviparous animals are animals that lay their eggs, with little or no other embryonic development within the mother.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Reproduction (or procreation or breeding) is the biological process by which new individual organisms – "offspring" – are produced from their "parents". Reproduction is a fundamental feature of all known life; each individual organism exists as the result of reproduction.
Animals make use of a variety of modes of reproduction to produce their young. Traditionally this variety was classified into three modes:
- oviparity (embryos in eggs)
- ovoviviparity (young born live)
- ovoviviparity (intermediate between the first two).
