Explanation:
Analysing the strengths and weaknesses of the current Wooden Toy website using SWOT Analysis:
STRENGTHS
Incorporates the typographic style that is inherent in the magazine
gets across some of the textures and some of the tactile feel through background
engaging newspaper aesthetic
easy to navigate
updated daily
WEAKNESSES
visually a bit cluttered and has a lot of content side bar content
very rigid layout doesn’t really reflect the innovative and interesting layouts that they have in the magazine
the sidebar content extends way past most of the main content in the centre, making for an awkwardly long webpage
OPPORTUNITIES
While there are some direct competitors that have similar content in their magazines, and perhaps even similar visual styles, most of them do not have a highly developed website. I would go as far as to say that Woden Toy is probably a lot better designed than the others, though all of them utilise a blogging platform.
This basically an opportunity to excel while they’re still ahead. I think that the content is definitely well chosen and should see their website as an opportunity to make a more interactive experience with their audience.
THREATS
Direct competition (magazines with similar target markets, interests and content) are all available online, and definitely have the same sort of content e.g. showcasing the work of different artists.
From a different view, they could see the ‘end of print’ as a threat since they’re are a magazine. They really need to utilise making the most of the online experience to keep up with technology.
