Schneider, a german soldier, was wounded by shrapnel in the thalamus of the brain. As a result of this incident, schneider emerged as a man who was victim of disconnected sensations... Schneider could only respond in vague, clumsy sweeping movements of the hand in the general direction of his head but it was only through the aid of his doctor's pointer which directed his hand that he was able to reach and point to his forehead. Without the doctor's assistance, schneider would return to the series of general, vague clumsy directional gestures... But while all of this was going on, a fly would settle on schneider's forehead and immediately in one graceful sweep of his hand, he would touch his forehead and flick in insect off.
