A student followed a path traveling a distance of 4km going to the East and 3 km going to North. What was his total distance and displacement?

Sagot :

Calculating Displacement.

Given

  • Vector 1 (V1) = 4km, East
  • Vector 2 (V2) = 3km, North
  • Displacement (x) = ?

As we can see to the problem, the displacement has a definite location because the vectors has a primary direction, which is East and North.

If you will form a graphical representation, it will form a right triangle, where the hypothenuse will be the displacement, so we can use the Pythagorean Theorem in solving the problem.

In finding the displacement, you have to include the angle and the direction of the displacment from the starting point of the vector.

x² = V1² + V2²

x² = 3² + 4²

x² = 9 + 16

x² = 25

√x² = √25

x = 5

x = 5 km, 45° Northeast

distance will be 7 km
