Dream Deferred simply states that a dream is a goal in life, not just dreams experienced during sleep. The poem speaks about what happens to dreams when they are put on hold. The poem leaves it up to you as a reader to decide what dream is being questioned.

In the poem “Harlem” why does it describe a dream deferred?
The “dream” was freedom and equality promised to African-American slaves as a result the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War. But it was decades before that became possible, because of the continuing prejudice of Southern privilege and new limitations on former slaves, an era known now as Jim Crow. It required another “Liberation” movement in the 1960’s to move that freedom and equality forward to where it is today—better but not completely free and equal. By the time he was writing that poem in the 1930’s most American blacks lived in poverty and without possible social mobility and many in peril of their lives. So it was still a dream deferred.
