To create a possibly wide number of fertilized eggs, as the gametes released by the mates have a reduced chance of survival due to it’s located environment. Therefore if a small amount of sperm/egg cells get drifted or eaten away, if a great number of these cells are released, there is at least another set of gametes to be fertilized.
