The “Midsummer”is a short story of Manong whom had met Ading on a road in a very hot summer day at a rural area. It starts when Manong was carrying his cart and saw a young woman named, Ading. He got attracted and started following her to where she went. He watched her as she filled the jar and placed it on top of her head. When dinner came, and when he was half through with his meal Ading came back there he offered her the dinner he have. Her lips parted in half smile and told him that she finished her dinner already that is why she’s getting some water. They had a little conversation and found comfortable in each other’s company. When suddenly the bucket of water splashed in his food accidentally. After that incident, Manong helped Ading. Ading invited him over to their house. At first, Manong refuses but Ading eventually convinced Manong which made him more interested to her. In the end, he then realizes that he fell in love with Ading that he can go wherever as long as he is with her. I can say the conflict of the story is man vs himself because Manong hide his feelings to Ading. The story is describing the Filipino people before, like a way of a young woman met a young man. The Filipino young women from the past used to be conservative and modest which is comparable to our generation we are living in. Like Ading in the story, she was a shy type young woman. We can also see Filipino values or traits and our ways of living within the story. It shows how gratitude and hospital are we Filipinos to others. Filipinos who live in the province are very well known to be simple yet they are contented for what they have. They are happy with small things and appreciate what they have and how they live life. The message of the story is that we must not forget to look back in our past and appreciate our customs, values and practices.
