How is the sacrament of baptism connected to our personal discovery of our identity?

Baptism is not a small thing . Using such powerful symbols as water, oil, and fire, Baptism is a powerful sacrament that washes away original sin and its consequences. It gives us a new name, binds us to a new group of believers, initiates us into a new way of life, and gives us a strong purpose in life. Baptism has significance at multiple stages.

Removal of original sin and real sin, if existing. The imprint of an indelible sign consecrating the individual to Christian worship. It's a member of Christ. Entry into the mystical body of Christ, the Church.

Historical

  • Within weeks after the Resurrection of Jesus, the apostles preached the Gospel to the people by thousands, baptizing them in the name of Jesus. Baptism has been the ordinary way of being a member of the Church ever since. Think of the long line of people before you—parents, grandparents, and spiritual ancestors—who were admitted to the Church at Baptism.

Theological

  • Baptism is a sacrament of baptism, purification, strengthening and acceptance. Baptism introduces us to the world of Christian believers. It gives us a new life in which we become the adopted children of God, disciples of Christ, and temples in which the Holy Spirit dwells. Baptism leaves a lasting divine imprint on our soul, which makes us holy and opens us to heaven and everlasting life with God.

Physical

  • As other sacrament, Baptism renders an abstract truth apparent. In other words, we use physical signs and rituals to convey in our lives our experience of God and His goodness. The icons you see at the Baptism Ceremony are as follows:
  • The sign of the Cross is traced on the forehead of the baptized person. This ceremonial gesture reflects the fact that the mystery of the Cross is at the core of our faith.

Cultural

  • Families also celebrate and affirm what happened at the altar by meeting after the service to tell stories, enjoy each other's company, share a meal, and celebrate in their own way who they are and what they believe. All present has the opportunity to cradle a new child and give his or her blessings and best wishes for a life of peace, holiness and faith.
  • What's going to happen at the Baptism? The Church rejoices because we have accepted a new believer and because we have once again celebrated the mysteries of God's love for us and our salvation.
