Each water molecule is very, very special. Most chemicals have other chemicals that behave very nearly the same way, but water is truly unique. There are other molecules that take on nearly the same shape, but none that have the same polar characteristics, and thus none that have the same ability to exchange atoms (to become acids & bases all on its own), to dissolve a huge variety of other chemicals, change densities, and thus support life.
