Answer:
It is important for the players in the game of basketball to have good traction. A way for you to have good traction is to have a pair of basketball shoes. Without a pair of basketball shoes statics have shown that would be difficult to get a good grip on the floor because the shoes are specially made for the wood floor. When you slid all over the floor the physics of running and stopping will help you with understanding the game of basketball.
The force responsible for the players' traction is friction. Friction opposes the motion of two objects when they come in contact with each other. In this case friction between the players' shoes and the basketball court keep the players from sliding. There are two types of friction, static friction, sliding friction, and rolling friction are occurring in basketball. Static friction occurs when two objects are still. It resists the start of movement. (For example, static friction is at work when you try to move a chair. It takes energy to start moving it, but once the chair is in motion it is easier to move). To start running, players have to overcome static friction, which can sometimes be difficult. Sliding friction is not as strong as static friction but it is still a force which has to be overcome in order to run. Sliding friction occurs when two surfaces are sliding past each other. (For example, the heat that you feel when you rub your hands together is a result of sliding friction). Since sliding friction is easier to overcome, it is easier for a player to keep moving than it is for them to start moving. Rolling friction occurs when the ball is rolling on the ground or the rim. Rolling friction tries to make objects that are round stop their motion. (When you throw a ball, after it stops bouncing, then it rolls, then stops. The result in the stop is rolling friction). Friction is helpful to the game of basketball. It enables players to stop quickly and start running in the opposite direction. Without friction players would slide uncontrollably around the court when they tried to stop running. Although friction can make the game more difficult, the game itself would be impossible to play if friction didn't exist.
