Here is the correct arrangement of the events during the menstrual cycle.

  1. The hypothalamus monitors and causes the release of hormones from the  pituitary gland.
  2. The hypothalamus sends a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) to the  anterior pituitary.
  3. Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus  stimulates luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicular stimulating hormone  (FSH) release from the anterior pituitary gland.
  4. LH and FSH are gonadotropins that act primarily on the ovaries in the female  reproductive tract.
  5. The FSH assists in the maturation of the follicles and causes the secretion of  estrogen from the follicles.
  6. The LH initiates the maturation of the follicles, converts ruptured follicles  into corpus luteum and causes the secretion of progesterone
  7. If fertilization occurs, the developing embryo will implant in the  endometrium and the ovary itself release a hormone estrogen which causes  the uterine lining to increase in thickness.
  8. If fertilization doesn't occur, the corpus luteum eventually degenerates, the  estrogen and progesterone levels drop, and the endometrium can no longer  be maintained.
  9. The thick uterine lining is no longer necessary, so the cells of the thickened  uterine lining break off and leave thru the vagina. The unfertilized egg is lost  and some blood is lost too. This loss of cells from the uterus lining, blood and  egg is called menstruation
  10. After menstruation, the cycle starts again.
