Surfaces affect the movement of an object because of its texture. For example, it is hard to pull a boat on the beach than on the sea. Why? Because the sea's texture is smooth, and so is the bottom of the boat. While on the beach, it has very small sand particles which makes a rough surface. The bottom of the boat is smooth, so it doesn't stand a chance against the beach.
