But why?
One of the friends made a strong tab on the table and the other friend clapped his hands in the air.
So, in the first case the sound wave is travelling as a pressure wave through the solid (i.e. table).
In the 2nd case, the sound wave is travelling as a pressure wave through air.
Now, we know that speed of sound waves is much faster in solids ( approx 5-7 times) as compared to that of air.
So, the tap on table will be heard much faster as compared to the clap.
