Set is a group of well-defined definite objects called elements (e)
Capital letters are used to denote set and lower case for e
A set with no element is an empty set or null set, symbolized as oor )
Notation of Sets. There are three common ways to describe a sel
1. Roster Notation
List each element of the set inside the symbol
+ The use of three dots (...) called ellipsis means the e of set continue
infinitely
A={1,2,3,4,5)
2. Verbal Description
Describe the set in words.
Set A is the set of counting numbers less than 6.
3. Set Builder Notation
List the properties which specify the whole common characteristics of
the elements e of set not the actual e.
A={x/xis a counting number>6)
When a set is contained in another set, for instance, every element of set A is in set
B. then set A is a subset of set B. Written asA SB
Every set (A) is a subset of itself(ASA).
An empty set is a subset of every set (A) (CA).
if in Set B there is at least one element not contained in Set A. it is referred to as
proper subset i.e. Set A is a proper subset of B: ACB.
To get the total number of subsets use the formula,
total number of subsets = 2"
where n is the total number of elements in the given set.
.
