The current time signature and key of Lupang Hinirang (Philippine National Anthem) is 4/4 in the key of G Major respectively. In my little knowledge of music notation, Major keys tend to sound happy and Minor keys sounds sad. Originally it was 2/4 signature and in C Major key it was a too fast tempo that it will be difficult to sing the lyrics.
Historically, it was a song intended to be played for a marching band during the revolution. The composer, Julian Felipe drew inspiration from several marching music and from the national anthem of France. The leader of the revolution, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo wanted a song that will stir patriotism to Filipinos. The music which was called then Marcha Nacional Filipina didn’t have the famous lyrics yet but it did produce the intended effect when it was played on June 12, 1898 (the date of the declaration of Philippine Independence). A poem written in Spanish titled Filipinas by a Filipino soldier and writer, Jose Palma was used for the music after a year.
