Pure Substances
Pure Substances are substances under the matter, together with mixtures, that are made up of only one kind of particle. It has a fixed or constant structure. Furthermore, there are two classifications of pure substance, namely element and compounds.
What is an Element?
Element is a subtype of pure substance that contains one kind of matter. It cannot be separated or broken down by physical or chemical methods. Elements are listed in the periodic table of elements further classified into metals, non-metals, and metalloids.
Example of elements: Neon (Ne), Hydrogen (H), Copper (Cu)
What is a Compound?
Unlike elements, compounds are substances that consist of two or more different elements that are bonded chemically in a fixed ratio. These substances can be separated into elements through chemical methods.
Examples of compounds: Carbon Monoxide (CO), Sodium Chloride (NaCl), Water (H2O)
Similarities of Compounds and Elements
Their basic unit of matter is atoms.
Since there is the presence of atoms, they have bonds linking the atoms to one another.
They are both under the category of pure substances.
They are homogenous or have a uniform appearance.
