Rafael M. Alunan III sits on the Boards of Sun Life of Canada (Philippines), Inc.; Sun Life Financial Plans, Inc.; Sun Life Asset Management Co, Inc.; Grepalife Asset Management, Inc., Pepsi Cola Products (Philippines), Inc, (PCPPI); the University of St. La Salle (USLS); and currently serves as Chairman, Harvard Kennedy School Alumni Association of the Philippines Board of Trustees, Chair of the Management Association of the Philippines’ National Security Committee, and Vice-Chair of the Institute of Corporate Directors’ National Governance Circle. He also chairs the Audit Committees of PCPPI and USLS, and the Governance and Compliance Committees of various SunLife companies.

He is a member of Former Senior Government Officials (FSGO); Eminent Fellow of the Development Academy of the Philippines; National Mission Council, De La Salle Philippines; a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) and Institute for Solidarity in Asia (ISA); a trustee of the Spirit of EDSA Foundation and Santeh Aquaculture Science and Technology Foundation; and writes a column for BusinessWorld. He is also a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).

He served in the Cabinets of Presidents Corazon C. Aquino and Fidel V. Ramos as Secretary of Tourism and Secretary of the Interior and Local Government, respectively. He holds the rank of Colonel in the Armed Forces of the Philippines, commanded the 131st Infantry Division (Standby Reserve) and the 9th Infantry Division (Ready Reserve) of the Philippine Army.

Mr. Alunan obtained his double degree in Business Administration and History-Political Science from De La Salle University; attended Ateneo de Manila University’s Master in Business Administration-Senior Executive Program; earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration and a certificate in Executive Education from Harvard Kennedy School of Government; and is a graduate of the Philippine Army’s Command and General Staff College.

He is an honorary member of Philippine Military Academy’s Class ’74; PC-Special Action Force; Special Forces Regiment (Airborne); and First Scout Ranger Regiment. He recently produced a documentary entitled “Tagaligtas” and co-authored the book “Silver Linings” about PC-SAF’s contributions to freedom and democracy, law and order, and peace and development
