The doctrine of the Trinity tells us at least two important things about God:

  • Jesus is God, but Jesus is not the Father. There are three divine persons.
  • Relationship, intimacy, is at the heart of God: “God is love”.

The persons of the trinity know each other thoroughly — they have no secrets from each other whatsoever because each divine person is omniscient. The persons of the Trinity are of one mind and heart — one will. You cannot be three omnipotent persons unless you are totally at one in purpose. The persons of the trinity are omnipresent and eternal — totally together, always.

So the trinity shows us a degree of closeness, unity, beyond anything possible among human beings. It also shows us that one of those persons became one of us.
