when praying before eating,sleep,and going out,
The times I have felt closest to God were when I felt like I have been given immediate direction from Him. It is an incredibly difficult thing to silence your own thoughts and allow God to speak during your prayer time; it's even more difficult to distinguish between thoughts that you originate yourself and ones spoken by God. I'm not very good at this, but there have been a handful of times in my life where I feel like the thought came directly from God.
