First, one would have to define what’s Freud theory, since he changed it a lot of his thesis during his hundreds of articles.
What he kept from beginning to end was the idea tha twe don’t know ourselves. That we cannot even know ourselves fully. It’s a powerful statement, since he is saying that what we think we are, it’s only a part of what we truly are.
I agree 100% with that thesis. I also agree with his idea that there is a reason why we don’t accept certain thoughts as belonging to us, that reason being that they are incongruous with the idea we have of who we are (determined not only by our past, but by our culture).
I also agree that not accepting parts of us produce symptoms, and that facing the things we don’t want to accept about ourselves, we will be able to overcome them.
In sum, I agree that we have to be courageous to really see ourselves and the world. I agree that truth is more important in the long term that comfort.
