1. Two distinct types of song are popular among the Maguindanaos:
— religious chants sung during the Friday noon service, the celebration of the Molud or Mawlid, the puwasa or Ramadan, and the periodic commemoration of the dead; and
—the less formal secular songs, such as love songs, legend chants, and lullabies.
2. Around the 16th century, the Muslim sultanates of Sulu, Lanao and Maguindanao were established from formerly Hindu-Buddhist Rajahnates. As Islam gained influence in Mindanao, the natives of the Sultanates had to either convert to Islam or pay tribute to their new Muslim rulers.
3. The Muslims resented the loss of their lands, including those idle but which formed part of their traditional community. This resentment grew as Muslims witnessed the usurpation by Christian settlers of vast tract of prime lands. This ignited disputes between them and the Christian settlers.
